World Spine Care

December 2009

This month the WFC Council has voted to endorse World Spine Care (WSC), a visionary new project led by Dr. Scott Haldeman, Chair, WFC Research Council, which has the goal of helping people in underprivileged regions of the world who suffer from health problems related to the spine. WSC will recruit volunteer health care professionals including chiropractors, physicians and physical therapists to provide core spine care. Volunteer specialists will fly in to deal with patients referred with serious spinal pathology.

WSC, which is a charitable non-profit organization registered in the USA, has multidisciplinary leadership, strong corporate support and is supported by the World Health Organization through the Bone and Joint Decade. Collaborating centers are Palmer College and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. BJD Liaison is Dr. Deborah Kopansky-Giles, WFC Council and CMCC, and WHO Liaison is Dr. Molly Robinson. WSC is currently completing a feasibility study for its first proposed country – Botswana.

Haldeman Biography

The Legacy of Scott Haldeman (600 pages, hardbound with CD-Rom with audio/video lectures and interviews), authored by Dr. Reed Phillips and published by NCMIC, is  now available.

Anyone truly interested in chiropractic, its history or its future will want to have this fascinating account of Scott Haldeman’s life – his challenges and triumphs growing up in South Africa as the son and grandson of chiropractors, training at Palmer College, then continuing his professional development in South Africa, Canada and the United States until being recognized internationally as a foremost authority on the conservative management of spinal pain.

Malaysia will become the latest country to introduce chiropractic education with the first intake of students next March at the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur. Head of Chiropractic is Dr. Michael Haneline, formerly a faculty member at Palmer West in San Jose, California.

Meanwhile second schools of chiropractic have opened their doors to students in Mexico and Spain – in September at the Universidad Estatal del Valle de Toluca near Mexico City and this month at the Barcelona College of Chiropractic in Barcelona.

Chiropractic Services at World Games in Taiwan

For 10 days in July Dr. Jackie Huang of Kaohsiung, Taiwan was a member of the Federation International du Chiropractique du Sport (FICS) team of 28 chiropractors serving over 5,000 athletes from 103 countries at the 8th World Games held in her home city. The World Games, part of the Olympic movement and using the 5 rings, feature 31 sports seeking entry to the main Olympics, such as archery, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens and other ball sports.

The International World Games Association has confirmed that chiropractic will once again be a core service for the next World Games to be held in Cali, Columbia in 2013. WFC's Montreal Congress Ranked a Huge Success by All

More than 1,100 doctors of chiropractic and students from 38 countries were present for the World Federation of Chiropractic’s highly successful 10th Biennial Congress in Montreal, Quebec, Canada April 30 – May 2. This celebration of chiropractic, hosted by the Canadian Chiropractic Association, began with an inspirational address from Canada’s 2008 Athlete of the Year – Chantal Petitclerc. Keynote speakers included Dr. Scott Haldeman, revealing the now sound research and evidence based for chiropractic management of patients with acute and chronic back pain, neck pain and headache, and Dr. David Eisenberg of Harvard reporting on his integration of chiropractic and other complementary services with medical care in the Harvard University hospital system.

Brazil – Federal Judge Rules in Favour of Chiropractic Profession

On March 3, 2009, in the latest step by the Brazilian Chiropractors’ Association (ABQ) to defend the chiropractic profession against efforts by PTs to have chiropractic declared a specialty of physiotherapy, Federal Judge Diana Brunstein has ruled strongly in favour of the ABQ. Chiropractic is a profession not a technique, says Judge Brunstein, and PT authorities should not seek to declare it a specialty of physiotherapy. An appeal by CREFITO the regulatory body for PT in Sao Paulo, asking to remove an earlier court injunction against CREFITO was denied. See:

WHO Beijing Declaration Supports CAM and Chiropractic

Strong new policy support for the continued growth and acceptance of chiropractic and other branches of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in national health systems was given by the World Health Organization and its member nations in Beijing this month at WHO’s Congress on Traditional Medicine, opened by WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan.
