The World Federation of Chiropractic was admitted into official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a non-governmental organization or NGO in January 1997. It maintains an active program of work with WHO, which includes support for WHO policies and programs, advice on matters relative to the chiropractic profession, and attendance at annual and other meetings.

As an example, when WHO held a congress on traditional medicine in Beijing in November 2008 in support of its policy that traditional medicine, also known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)’ should be appropriately recognized and regulated in member countries, WHO asked the WFC to plan and administer a Symposium on Manual Methods of Healthcare as part of the congress. One product of the partnership between WHO and the WFC has been WHO’s Guidelines on Basic Training and Safety in Chiropractic (2005). These provide minimum educational standards for chiropractic education and the regulation of chiropractic practice by national governments.
